Adoma Peace Cup Unites Agago Youth Through Football and Peacebuilding
Excitement is sweeping across Agago District as the 5th edition of the Adoma Peace Cup kicks off, bringing together youth from all corners of the region in a celebration of football, unity, and community empowerment.
The annual tournament, organized by Access Centre Uganda, has grown into one of the most anticipated youth events in Northern Uganda.
Launched in 2018, the Adoma Peace Cup was born out of a vision to use sports as a tool for peacebuilding, talent development, and youth engagement. This year’s edition features 24 teams from sub-counties across Agago District, competing over six weeks in various community pitches.
According to Hon. Makmot Edward Otto, Executive Director of Access Centre Uganda, the tournament is more than just a game.
“The Adoma Peace Cup is about bringing youth together to build friendships, reduce violence, and inspire positive change. Football is a language they all understand,” he said.
Community members have praised the tournament’s impact. “Since the games started in our parish, crime and youth idleness have reduced,” said Simon Otema, a resident of Lapono.
The tournament also includes peace dialogues, mentorship talks, and health outreaches at match venues. Local leaders and security agencies have joined hands to support the event, recognizing its role in creating a safe, hopeful space for young people.
This year’s finals are expected to draw over 3,000 spectators, including guests from neighboring districts. Winners will receive sports equipment and small cash prizes, while standout players will be linked to regional football clubs and training opportunities.
